Ontario Jewish Archives Exhibit at Miles Nadal JCC

Beginning Sunday, you can head to the Miles Nadal JCC to enjoy the photo exhibit 

The Ontario Jewish Archives at 40: Four Decades of Collecting and Sharing our Community's History.

And I quote, "From a 1920s dairy store in Kensington Market to cottage life in the North, the Ontario Jewish Archives' 40th anniversary exhibition features photographs from its expansive collection that tell the stories that have shaped the community."
The exhibit runs until October 3rd.

MNJcc Events

I recently joined the MNJcc and am enjoying working out there -- friendly place, all ages and no hard-body attitudes.
That reminded me that I haven't Blogged lately about upcoming events at the neighbourhood institution, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.
So... From Barley to Psychology: Evolving Approaches to the Omer takes place Wednesdays in April.
"Countdown to Shavuot! The Omer, the seven-week period from Passover to Shavuot, marks the relationship between the Israelites’ Exodus from slavery and the receiving of the Torah. Delve into Biblical, Rabbinic, Kabbalistic (Jewish mystical), Hasidic and contemporary sources, exploring the meanings of this significant period on the Jewish calendar. Texts will be presented in Hebrew and English. Suitable for beginner and intermediate students. Members: $85, non-Members $105.Presented with Makom: Creative Downtown Judaism."
As well, registration is open for the centre's summer camps; there are a wide variety of events taking place in the Al Green Theatre; and on display is a photography exhibit called Nurture: Stories of New Midlife Mothers.

Tom's Place Fall Warehouse Sale Nov. 9 to 13

Tom's Place is a men's clothing store staple in Kensington Market. Every year, the store has massive Spring and Fall sales in various places throughout the GTA.
From November 9th to 13th, the sale will be at the Miles Nadal JCC at Spadina and Bloor.
It's a great spot to pick up Holiday gifts.

Summer Camps in the Area

I told you about a lot of summer camp options in the area back in April. But if you had a busy spring and are looking at the calendar and realizing, "School's over soon. And work isn't," then let me remind you about two options:
The Miles Nadal JCC at Spadina and Bloor has some open camp spaces, as does local artist Deb Wiles for her July Art Adventure Summer Camps.
The rest? Well, I can't vouch that they have space, but you can try!

Learn About Controversial Directors at MNJcc

Film critic Adam Nayman is going to examine some of film's most controversial directors during an upcoming series of talks at the Miles Nadal JCC.

The Eye Weekly and Cinema Scope film critic will talk about Roman Polanski, Paul Verhoeven, David Cronenberg and Catherine Breillat.

Part of the Media Monday series, classes cost $12, $6 for students and during the first class on March 21st, paying guests can bring a friend for free.

Community Purim Carnival Today at MNJCC

The MilesNadalJCC at Spadina and Bloor is holding a Community Purim Carnival today.

And I quote:

"Make some noise at our annual Purim Carnival! Lots of zany fun including a 'pie in the face' game, Hockey Night in Shushan, Karaoke, mini-putt and much more.
Get creative with henna drawings, arts and crafts and you can make your own Mishloach Manot! Hamentashen and other tasty treats will be on sale. This Sunday from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm in the MNjcc Gymnasium.
Fun for everyone at only $5 per person or $10 per family. See you there!"

Media Monday Lectures at the MN JCC

There's an interesting series of talks about TV and film slated to begin October 19th at Miles Nadal JCC as part of Media Mondays.
Lecturer Mark Clamen will tackle television and discuss why Now Is The Golden Age Of Television, among other topics, and Shlomo Schwartzberg will discuss cinema, including How Hollywood Looks At Youth.
The drop-in fee is $15 per lecture, but you can sign up for the series.

Klezmer Music Workshop at the Miles Nadal JCC

Has Klezmer music always intrigued you?
The wiktionary (yes, wiktionary) describes it as "A type of popular Jewish folk music especially associated with Ashkenazi cultures."
Staring October 20th, you can learn about Klezmer music by playing it at the Miles Nadal JCC at Spadina and Bloor.
