Donate Old Computers, Printers and Parts To A Good Cause

DH is a techie and loves Freecycle.org; he wanted to share this message that came via that site:

Subject: WANTED: COMPUTERS/LAPTOPS/MONITORS/PRINTERS/ACCESSORIES/PARTS
As many of you already know, for more than 3 years I have been fixing and rebuilding computers and arranging to give them to families and individuals who might otherwise not be able to afford one, especially families with school-age kids.
Currently there is a project in place to give computers not only to freecycle members, but also to people who are registered with the a part of the social services network that deals with troubled teens and teens from 'unsavory' areas of the city. Many of these are high school kids who don't have a home system - leaving them on an uneven playing field when it comes to doing research and papers and reports etc.
And of course, I have a waiting list for systems with people from all areas of the city with all different needs and it gets longer every week.
My closet is pretty bare.... I can use whatever you have - parts, pieces, motherboards, boxes, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, whatever it is, it can be refurbished and put to good use and if it can't then it can be recycled properly to ensure it doesn't go to landfill or a third world country to pollute the environment...
I currently have several people on my waiting list - and it gets longer every day. Unfortunately, I can only work so fast and only with whatever gets donated. Please note that I *do* sell some older systems and parts etc so that I can buy parts such as hard drives and ram etc. (Many systems these days come without hard drives for security reasons, and most don't come with enough RAM to run the more advanced programs.) So please don't be offended - sometimes I have an over-abundance of monitors or printers, so some get sold to pay for RAM, and of course, I do generate revenue from the items such as motherboards and circuit cards that get recycled.
Some computers are given to other non-profit organizations - so if you know of a non-profit that needs them, let me know. But, for now, we need systems, parts, monitors, and so on....

Especially needed right now:
- computers (desktop - P2 up)
- laptops (dead or alive)
- printers
- scanners
- ram chips (sdram, ddr, laptop ram)
- desktop and laptop hard drives (anything over 10 gig works)
- keyboards
- mice
- monitors (at least 17" crt or 15" lcd)

If you have ANY extra hardware - printers, scanners, monitors, computers, laptops, modems, computer cards, digital cameras, dvd players, vhs machines, televisions and would like to contribute them to the effort to spread things around to single-parent and low-income families, please email me.
If you are concerned about your personal data on your hard drive, feel free to pull the drive out of the system before dropping it off or arranging to have it picked up. Hard drives that are given to us are reformatted and wiped using several wiping programs before being reused. Hard drives that can't be used because of the size are destroyed by drilling and then sent to a certified e-cycler for shredding.
Don't worry if it doesn't work - if I can't make it work (very few computers beat me) then we strip it down and use the parts to rebuild other computers.....
So far this year through the efforts of freecycle members all over GTA and other contributors, including businesses, I've placed over 30 computer systems in new homes.... and it's almost back to school time, so the need is now urgent!
Naturally I accept contributions from individuals as well as businesses and larger corporations - so if your office or workplace is upgrading, please keep this email in mind. Pickups can be arranged for almost any time (with sufficient advance warning)...
If you CAN contribute anything - working or not, please drop me an email!
Many thanks
Robert"
