DH works with a woman, Nikila, who is helping people in Africa. This has nothing to do with the Annex, but I found her story compelling:
"As some of you know, I will be visiting Kenya in early November, going to the village of Kithuia outside Nairobi where some friends and I have been paying the school fees of the first girls in their village to attend high school.
... I want to let you know that my current project involves the village itself where the people are experiencing the worst drought in Kenya's history. Finding firewood which, in good times, takes up several hours of the day, has now become impossible because of deforestation in the area.
In thinking about how I could be useful, I began researching solar cookers in the hopes that I could find one and bring it with me to the village.
There are lots and lots of designs and I was REALLY happy when I discovered that a non-profit organization within Kenya is actually training people on a model that is portable and uses materials local to the Kenyan villages.
By our standards they are inexpensive ($15 each), so I have decided to purchase three and bring them with me when I visit the village in November.
I'm trying to raise enough money to bring 30 solar cookers with me when I go. One friend donated $30 today so I have 25 cookers to go."
If you'd like to help and want to donate $15 for this great cause, please contact Nikila at Nikila@primus.ca.
Cheers,
Vanessa
And there's a PS: "Also, if you know of anyone who has a functioning second hand laptop, we are looking for one to take to the family we are working with in Kenya. Nicholas Kithembe is one of the few hard working dads from the village and he has been communicating with us with a 1996 computer which is too old and about to die... anyone willing to donate a laptop from say 2004 onwards would be most appreciated!"
