An exhibit devoted to sneakers, Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, just opened at the Bata Shoe Museum, an interesting building with a small footprint at St. George and Bloor.
Billed as "the first exhibition in North America to examine the history of sneaker culture," it runs until next Spring. (Get it? "It runs"?).
Sneaker afficionados, take note: "Rare sneakers from the archives of adidas, Nike, Reebok, PUMA, Converse and Northampton Museums and Art Gallery, along with loans from rap legends Run DMC, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia aka Kool Bob Love and Dee Wells from OSD are featured.
The exhibition also includes the latest designs from fashion designers, including Christian Louboutin, Pierre Hardy, Lanvin and Prada, as well as exceptional limited editions such as the Nike Dunk Supremes and LeBron James Stewies. A particular highlight is the handpicked sneakers and sketches by Nike designers Tinker Hatfield, Tobie Hatfield, Mark Smith and Eric Avar."
A Torontoist article about the exhibit features a lot of great pics, including this one, which is Prada's kiltie wingtip. Very... um... green.
Cheers,
Vanessa
