I've been fascinated by Toronto's buried rivers ever since I wrote a news article about them decades ago.
Where are they? Well, buried Garrison Creek flows practically past our doorstep, including beneath Christie Pits park. Often, steep-walled ravines lacking rivers or streams = buried waterways.
Why were they buried? It's hard to imagine now, but the rivers had turned into cesspools of filth and waste. They were stinky and unsafe.
The story of Garrison Creek from the Lost Rivers Walk website explains it well.
Toronto is not the only city to have buried some of its waterways.
Lost Rivers, screening this weekend at the Bloor HotDocs Cinema, explores buried rivers around the world.
Cheers,
Vanessa
