I was cruising through Facebook this morning and stumbled on this talk by Barbara Ehrenreich that exactly summarizes a concept that I've been struggling to define for awhile.
Don't you love it when that happens?
The Smile or Die talk is about the dangers of mindless positivity, or facile optimism. Having dealt with health issues during the past decade, I've encountered a fair bit of this shiny, shallow attitude and found it to be dangerous to comprehension and, ultimately, healing. Don't get me wrong: I am an optimist, almost to an annoying degree. But I like to think that I temper it with realism.
On a larger scale, I love what she says about what this attitude has done to our North American society and economy.
Hope you enjoy the talk, too.
Cheers,
Vanessa
