I grew up canoeing, swimming in rivers and lakes, building campfires at cottages and getting out of the city every once in awhile to enjoy beautiful rural Ontario.
For many years, it never occurred to me that other people didn't also do these things in their youth. Then my sister rented her cottage to a family new to Canada and discovered that they spent the majority of their time up north huddled in the cottage, frightened. Odd noises, strange animals and lack of knowledge conspired to keep them housebound. Aha! Of course. And I'm sure there are many Canadians who didn't camp in their youth, either, for various reasons.
So if camping is new to you, you might want to take part in Learn To Camp. Run by Ontario Parks, it offers online tutorials and real-world, overnight experiences during which the equipment is provided.
Brilliant idea!
