Learn About Insurance 101 During Next Seaton Village Residents' Association Meeting

Good morning!
The Seaton Village Residents' Association "and local residents are holding a series of evenings discussing home insurance and home fire prevention safety over the next few months. We are pleased to announce the first meeting: “Do you really know the details of your home insurance policy?”

On January 16th, the SVRA hosts:

"HOME INSURANCE 101

Please join us and learn how to read your policy, how to maximize it in case of an unexpected and potentially devastating occurrence – like house fire – or if you or your neighbour may be planning to renovate. If you have knob and tooth wiring you will want to come!"

It takes place Thursday, January 16th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at St. Alban's.

Vermont Square Renewal: New Work Happening

Good morning, The Seaton Village Residents' Association Facebook page had some good news July 4 about improvements at Vermont Square Park. And I quote:  "Park Renewal: It's on like Donkey Kong!

The City has confirmed the start date for the next phase of the park renewal is July 9th - weather permitting - the protective fences will go up first.

At this time, the City will also be replacing the info board in the park (outside the south end of the playground fence) to illustrate and map the work to be done during this phase.

Ads and signage will be going up ASAP around the park and on the Seaton Village Residents' Association (SVRA) website to inform the community. We would appreciate members of the Dog Community helping to share information with others who enjoy the off leash area so it is widely known that the space will be shifted somewhat for the next few months!”

Committee of Adjustment Hearing Re: 1000-02 Bathurst

Methinks this notice on the Seaton Village Residents' Association Blog says that there is a City of Toronto Committee of Adjustment meeting today at 4:30 pm devoted to the proposed development at 1000-02 Bathurst St.
You can read it and decide for yourself.
It also contains some short-form information about the previous meeting devoted to the proposed development on Bathurst, south of Dupont.

"Does anyone know this dog?! He was found by one of our neighborhood bottle collectors who found him wandering on the road. He was almost hit by a car. He brought him to me so now I'm trying to find out where he belongs! He is a little poodle or poodle mix. He is an intact male who is a total sweetheart. His fur is pretty matted and he is wearing a collar, but know tags. He was found around Bloor and Symmington. Please pass it on and contact me if you have any info."

There is a Seaton Village Residents' Association meeting tonight beginning at 7 pm at St. Alban's.
Cell phone towers and a Bathurst Street visioning study are on the agenda.

Vermont Square Park Revitalization Open House Feb. 16th

"Vermont Square Park Revitalization Open House
The Seaton Village Residents' Association and the Vermont Square Park Renewal Committee are hosting an Open House to share the Phase One plan for the park:

Date: Thursday, February 16th, 2012
Time: 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: Palmerston Public School, Library, 7[34] Palmerston Ave
Many hours of hard work and dedication from the Vermont Square Park Renewal Committee and park neighbours have brought us here. Please join your neighbours to review the Phase One plan and ask any questions you may have.
Construction will begin in April, 2012."

Our neighours to the west in Seaton Village have an active residents' association. The SVRA has a website and recently launched a community notice board.
Since I'm partial to these types of online, virtual communities, I thought that I would spread the word.

SVRA Meeting Tonight

Tonight is the Seaton Village Residents' Association meeting from 7 to 8:30 pm in the library at St. Alban's.

SVRA Police Meeting Update

Well, despite the good news that a thief had been caught red handed breaking into a home on Hallowe'en morning, break ins and vandalism still are occurring in our area.
This is from the Seaton Village Residents' Association website:
"While there has been an arrest made in conjunction with 33 B&Es in the neighbourhood, homes continue to be burglarized and individuals have been observed walking the neighbourhood checking door handles of area cars – throughout the day! Night time sees windows of cars being smashed, especially in back laneways."

The SVRA hosted a police officer at a meeting last week and a neighbour who attended passed on the information he provided in order to share it far and wide:
"- be aware - if you see someone who looks suspicious, or someone lurking in the alleys, trying to open car doors, walking between or behind houses, call the police. If someone is in your alley at the same time every day, doing something you don't like the look of, report it with info about times they're there.
- if you see someone who is unfamiliar, say hello to them - burglars are less likely to steal if they know they've been seen.
- if you have outdoor lights, leave them on at night.
- don't leave anything of any value in your car.
- adults only - try using the alleys as your main routes instead of the street. This is not suggested for kids - some 11 year old kids were approached in an alley by 2 men who tried to sell them drugs, and were aggressive enough that the kids felt they had to run away.
- keep your property bordering the laneway well maintained - if someone dumps garbage, report it to the Illegal Dumping # - 416-392-0873, or clean it up yourself. If someone sprays graffiti on your garage door, clean it off. This kind of awareness and care can deter crime.
- install motion sensor lights around your parking area.
Here are the numbers to call:
If you see a crime occurring, CALL 911. See blurb from the police below for important things to keep in mind.
If you have been the victim of a theft, destruction of property or vandalism, CALL THE POLICE AND FILE A REPORT. The police need to know what is happening in the neighbourhood in order to police it properly. The number to report a crime is 416-808-2222.
If you see someone or something fishy, CALL THE POLICE. The officer was emphatic about this - they need our help - they can't be everywhere at once. The number to call is 416-808-1500.
We all need to keep our eyes open to make sure this neighbourhood stays safe. There are only so many police in the city. Our involvement can go a long way to protect ourselves and our neighbours.

I urge all of you to join the Seaton Village Residence Association to receive information about your neighbourhood.
This is a blurb sent out by the police at 14 Division that has some good info to keep in mind:
Remember, all crimes should be reported to the police immediately, even if it is only an attempt. Hesitate only long enough to ensure your safety.
Crime cannot be controlled or prevented if it is not reported. By reporting crimes and suspicious activities you can protect yourself and others. Confrontation with suspicious people or suspected criminals is not recommended. Remember your safety is paramount. If a crime has occurred, do not touch anything or clean up until the police have inspected it for evidence.
- Become the best witness possible by noticing details about the suspect, mannerism, age, height, weight and appearance, compare them to yourself or people you know
- Memorize tattoos, scars or prominent features
- Note clothing worn but keep in mind that outer clothing can be changed
- Vehicle licence number, make, model, colour and number of doors
- Call police immediately! Hesitate long enough to ensure your own safety

Police To Attend SVRA Wednesday Meeting

Hot off the presses: for those of you concerned about recent car vandalism and auto break ins, the Seaton Village Residents' Association has invited a 14 Division police representative to its meeting this Wednesday at St. Alban's.

From 7 pm to 8 pm you can ask questions and, hopefully, get some answers.

Vermont Square Renewal Meeting October 23

Community groups and members and our local councillor have been hard at work for a long time now to maintain and renew our neighbourhood's green jewels: our parks.

Let me say kudos to them, particularly the volunteers. There are not enough thanks given to those of us who sit through endless meetings, take endless notes and spend endless hours, for free, in order to contribute to the greater good.

On behalf of those of us who enjoy the fruits of your efforts: thank you!
Anyway, I digress...

Vermont Square Park, which runs east of Palmerston Avenue, north of Olive Avenue, is being renewed and SVRA meetings are underway to gather community input about its future.

If you want to have your say, do it now.

The next meeting is Sat., Oct. 23rd in Vermont Square Park from 10 am until 1 pm.
