Earth Hour Tomorrow

An email I received this morning reminded me that Earth Hour takes place tomorrow. I just pledged to turn off my lights from 8:30 to 9:30 pm tomorrow night. (Breezy! As usual, I'll be in a darkened theatre, enjoying the Banff Mountain Film Festival.)

The goal of Earth Hour?
"Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the largest grassroots environmental event in history – Earth Hour. Earth Hour asks individuals, businesses and governments around the world to turn off their lights for one hour to support urgent action on climate change."

Earth Hour Tonight

Just a reminder that you are invited to turn your lights out tonight from 8:30 to 9:30 to mark Earth Hour.

Personally, I will be out at dinner. I'll probably be walking home during Earth Hour and I'll be curious to see how many people actually turn off their lights.

If you think it's a hollow gesture, consider images like the one at left.
What a stark reminder of the location of the world's energy hogs.

And when was the last time you spent an hour in the dark?
I was reminded that the city is never truly dark when I went camping last summer and the sun set. There is something quite magical about the dark that we lose touch with when we have the lights blazing all the time.

Turn Off Your Lights Tonight For Earth Hour

Every year during Earth Hour, which is tonight from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, I'm sitting in the dark at the Bloor Cinema watching the Banff Mountain Film Festival.
So I can safely say that I'm a supporter!
I love the idea of Earth Hour: everyone turns their lights off for an hour. It's easy and it makes people think about their energy use.
Here's what WWF-Canada has to say about it:
"WWF is calling on Canadians to think about how we use and produce energy. To create the best possible future for Canadians and for the planet, let's stop wasting energy, and generate what we need from clean, renewable sources like wind and solar. Canada can be a world leader in clean energy. But the longer we wait, the more it will cost - both in dollars and environmental impact."
So put aside your cynicism, shelve your doubts and just do it.

Ready To Turn Your Lights Out Saturday?

Earth hour looms... it's a great idea that has hit a chord with people around the globe: on Saturday, March 27th, turn your lights off for an hour beginning at 8:30 pm.

My lights will be off, but I feel like I will be cheating a bit; I'll be at the Bloor Cinema watching the Banff Mountain Film Festival. I guess that counts, though!
